This is my evaluation of my Music video, Digi Pack and Magazine Advert.
In what ways do my media products use, develop or challenge forums and conventionsof real media products?
(Evaluation 1)
In this part of my evaluation I talk about how I have developed my products and how they challenge or go with conventions of real media products. I have taken screenshots of my music video, digi pack and magazine advert to explain how every element works.
How effective is the combination of my main product and ancillary texts?
(Evaluation 2)
This is essentially a deconstruction of my own music video covering three main points. The brand identity of my music video, the representations of the band, the genre of the music and final reflections of my music video.
The aim of creating my music video, Digi pack and Magazine advert was to maintain the brand identity all the way through the three pieces of work. Throughout the three pieces of work I wanted to create the idea of being on a journey while at the same time, highlighting the fact that in the world we live in today, there is very little difference between the mainstream and Indie culture which exists. The sense of being on a journey really comes through in all three pieces as a collective. The idea of signposts and dirt trails away into the distance on my Digi pack and Magazine advert really links with the narrative of my music video where one of my actors is being pursued in a wooded area along muddy tracks. This brings all three tasks together nicely. I have also tried to create this idea of reaching out to my target audience very clearly in all of the elements of my tasks but I think it comes through the strongest in the narrative of the my music video. The fact that my two actors are dressed so similarly is really trying to emphasise this point of Indie culture being so closely linked to the mainstream. In music taste and clothing these days a distinct parallel can be drawn between to two and I think people get this in my music video. The music track is from an indie rock band, (The Notice) but even that has links to a lot of mainstream songs out there which only helps back up the narrative of the video as well as the band performance where the band are in their most natural environment carrying as well as playing the song.
Representation of the Band
There is a lot to be said about the representations of the band within all three of the tasks I have created. To begin with, the idea of a wide open space behind the signpost in my Magazine advert seems strange straight away but combine it with elements of the band performance side of my music video and it makes sense. A lot of the band performance element of my music video is the band during down time relaxing and carrying on as well as playing. It links with the open space behind the signpost in my magazine advert because a lot of the time it is more about the waiting while being part of a band than actually doing things and making progress. A lot of band just have to wait for their right time to break and do something brilliant and I think this highlights it really well. I wanted the band to be captured in their most natural form during the video and so I didn’t ask them to wear specific clothing for the filming of the video. This, as well as the relaxing they did helped me capture the shots I needed. Within the footage you can see elements of existing bands in the way they laugh and joke on which gives them links to bands such as ‘The Arctic Monkeys’ and ‘The Libertines’, which was the angle I was going for. It also helps associate the band with the indie rock culture which will attract my target audience.
Genre of the music/Final reflections
The Band, (The Notice) are an indie rock band from Consett and draw their inspiration from band like, ‘The Arctic Monkeys’ and ‘The Wombats’. These bands are also Indie rock/Alternative bands. The genre of The Notice, (Indie rock) goes together well with the target audience I aimed for during my research which was based around a more Indie audience. However my aim was always to highlight the parallels between Indie culture and the mainstream while showing this to my Indie audience.
I also believe that The Notice are a band that more than the Indie community can reach out to and entertain. They will appeal to more than my target audience which is a good thing and is also what the aim of my video was. The message the band carry in the video – and also my narrative- is all about how similar the mainstream is to the Indie culture which exists out there as they continue on their journey (represented by the narrative) throughout life and the music industry. I think that the genre of the music just helps add another layer to my music video and makes it that bit more special.
How did I use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
(Evaluation 3)
In this section of my evaluation I look at the technology I have used throughout this coursework to create my digi pack, magazine advert and music videos. The technology ranges from skills learnt last year on photoshop during AS, windows movie maker for my prelim video, Premier elements for my real music video and the equipment to make my music video as well.
What have I leaned from my audience feedback?
